Remodeling in Chapel Hill, NC

Chapel Hill is the western end of our coverage, and the standard expected here is high — which suits us, because the parts of a remodel we care most about are the parts that only show up years later.

The older neighborhoods around the town centre and out toward Carrboro have houses from the 1920s through the 1960s, many on wooded, sloping lots. Two things follow from that. First, the framing has usually been modified more than once and needs looking at honestly before a wall comes out. Second, water management matters more than it does on a flat lot — crawl spaces, grade against the foundation, and how a new addition or porch sheds water are things we look at before we quote, not after.

In Southern Village, Meadowmont and the newer parts of town the houses are sound and the projects are finish-led: kitchens opened up and rebuilt, primary bathrooms taken back to the studs and properly waterproofed, natural stone and large-format tile, and finish carpentry — built-ins, wainscoting, trim — to a level that stands up to close inspection.
